Why the Sun Always Shines in Sequim

Updated: Oct 3, 2018

You might have heard about the famous rain shadow that falls over the City of Sequim, allowing approximately 16 inches of rainfall each year, and making it one of the driest places in Western Washington.

Perhaps you've read the native story from the Jamestown S'kallam Tribe about the two brothers who ascend to the Land Above to avenge the death of their father. After they complete their task they decide to stay and marry. The older brother commits to carrying a large ball of light over the city each day and the younger brother a smaller ball of light each night. There is even a totem pole celebrating this story at the Sequim Civic Center.

But if you ask the people that live here why Sequim is “sunny,” they will tell you that it’s the sense of community and the small-town, friendly atmosphere. Sequim is the kind of town where people still say hello at the park and wave from their cars.

We think that’s the perfect reason to hold a Sunshine Festival in Sequim at the end of winter when the days are short and it’s easy to feel the blues. We’re celebrating our sunny weather, warm community, and the promise of the spring and summer to come. There will be activities for all ages throughout the festival. Earn your “bling” by participating in events through the Great Big Scavenger Hunt and help us to light up the night at the Sun Fun Run at dusk. We’ll finish off the day with a spectacular drone show and beach-themed party.

We can’t guarantee that the sun will shine on your visit to Sequim, but the odds are better than anywhere else in Western Washington. And even if the sun doesn’t shine, we’ll help you to make your own sun while you are here.

Whether or not the sun is shining when you visit, you'll find warm, friendly faces and a welcoming community in Sequim.
